What is a Medical Herbalist?

And what do we do?

A Medical Herbalist is a practitioner who uses gentle plant medicines, diet and lifestyle advice to treat chronic disease and promote health.

We are trained in the biomedical model, and in many of the same examination techniques as your GP. This enables us to work alongside and communicate with conventional medical professionals, and we are trained to prescribe herbs safely alongside pharmaceutical medicine.

A large part of our training is focused on diet and nutrition. As Hippocrates said "all disease begins in the gut." In our treatment of a patient we look holistically at the person in front of us in order to address the root causes of disease and promote health.

Despite our modern training, our understanding of the application of plant medicine is based on centuries of tradition. Western Herbal Medicine in Britain is a product of indigenous British folk traditions, classical Greek medicine, and healing traditions from North America.

The conditions we treat:

  • Chronic skin conditions: eczema, psoriasis.

  • Chronic digestive ailments: IBS, IBD, constipation, acid reflux.

  • Nervous: Anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress.

  • Gynaecological: Menstrual issues, fertility, peri-menopause/menopause.

  • Urinary: Recurrent cystitis, interstitial cystitis, gravel, chronic infections.

  • ME.

  • Fibromyalgia.

  • Autoimmune: rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Musculoskeletal: arthritis, tension.

  • Respiratory: Asthma, COPD.
